January means a lot of things to a lot of different people. For some, it’s the start of a great new year! Though for high schoolers, it’s also crucial for one more thing. Semester Finals! These two words pretty much characterize the state of being about everyone at school. First of all, the semester’s also going to end on January 26th, so everyone is worried about doing good on the last few unit tests, to be able to maintain or increase their GPA. With this, we hope to start an academically strong year.
Finals are semester tests that occur twice throughout the year. They are cumulative tests where they test you on everything you have learned in the semester through one big test. It includes all of the units you have studied during the semester and can be in the form of a project or a test. For more stem focused subjects such as math, APES (environmental science) and all other sciences, there are always going to be tests, at least in my school. These finals are also used as practice tests for the AP exam upcoming in May. AP classes are college level courses you can take in high school. The test is out of 5 levels and if you get a 3 or an above, you can get college credit for it. These AP tests are on all the units we’ve studied in that class over the year. It’s usually 2-3 hours (depends on the subject) and multiple choice and free response questions combined.
At the end of every semester there is a finals week. This is when our usual 50-minute class schedule changes to give us more time for tests. Each final test is 2 hours long. There are 2 finals a day, and the rest of the time in school is given to us as prep periods for the next upcoming final. This is my second year of taking the final as they start in your freshman year of high school (9th grade).
As you can see based on my description of the finals, it’s a very stressful week, and there’s a tense atmosphere in school. Hence, our ASB (Associated student body) decided to raise a fundraiser. The school is selling care packages for us to buy! These are packages that will be delivered to us after any subject’s final of our choosing. It’s to decrease our stress and will help calm us down. The package includes chips, juice, other snack items a stuffed animal and fidget toy. I think it’s a unique and creative idea to raise money for our grade. The profits that they will earn as a result of selling these packages will go into the sophomore grade’s fund.
So, this basically sums up January for us high schoolers. It’s truly a month of hard work, but it’s all worth it after we finish the semester high and do good on our finals. I truly wish you all the best for your tests/exams. Ok, bye I’m going to go study now. - Navaka
