My mind was racing, a 1000 thoughts spiraling through my mind. I have to finish this assignment, that project and study for so many tests. Though the thought that cut the long line of thoughts and displayed prominently in my mind was this. Winter Ball was in a week! This being my first dance in my new school, I was excited. I was simply bursting with joy at the thought of me wearing my dress, doing my hair and makeup, and taking pictures with my friends.

My favorite part before a dance (besides dinner with friends ofc) is shopping for my dress. I always browse through my favorite store’s online gallery, searching for the most perfect and unique dress I can find for me. I always take my parents’ opinions, knowing they have great taste when it comes to me. I finally settled on a velvet green dress with ruffles enveloping it, a V-neck finishing the look. I adored matching it with gold earrings and black heels. I’m glad I got to match with one of my friends, her wearing red while me in green, finishing our Christmas look. She went to a different school though, and I had to get a form signed so she could attend. It was fun going through the process of signing it with her and waiting in line to buy our tickets. It was a fun experience, something that’s always characteristic of a dance.

So I did complete them. Studied for my tests, finished all my assignments and planned to do my project around the dance. This event was similar to the Homecoming dance I attended in my home high school in the fall. My friends and I planned to hang out before, take photos, and have dinner. Even though I’ve been to school dances before, this one felt different, special somehow. This was my first dance with people from my new school and it was definitely a new experience if not even a little exciting.

I am always a person who makes the plans and gets everyone together. I like doing that, and everyone always relies on me to do so anyways. We started finding places near the dance venue, and figuring out who all was coming with us before. Lucky for us, Redmond was hosting their annual Redmond Lights. This is a huge event they host every winter, where there are a bunch of decorations with different colored lights in all sizes and shapes. It fills me with wonder each year, as I gaze upon on the mama and baby deer made from lights, a cute whale, and a cylindrical structure you can walk through. It always feels like Wonderland as I walk through the alight pathway, twirling in my dress as my parents take my photos.

We did the same this year, except we were all headed for a dance afterwards. We did group and solo pictures, all ready to post on Instagram later. For me, it’s a storage for all the memories I shared with my friends growing up. It felt special, my favorite people with me, having the time of our life.

After photos, we hurried on over to dinner, talking and practically vibrating with energy. Joking around and helping ourselves to delicious Thai food, we talked about who all are going to be at the dance and whether or not our favorite songs will be played. The venue was located in a cute cottage like structure, with fairy lights strung up front and colorful, dim lighting. When we finally arrived, our favorite Taylor Swift song greeted us, and we quickly rushed out on the dance floor. Soon, everyone arrived, and we went to the photo booth to get our pictures taken. Standing there with goofy signs and funny expressions, I was truly grateful to have such wonderful and close friends.

It was truly a night to remember, with photos, food, dance, singing at the top of our lungs, and in general a great night with friends. - Navaka
